Project Overview:
Small and medium-sized farms face rising energy costs and limited access to reliable power sources. Between 2019 and 2022, we completed several projects for Livada Moldovei in Moldova to address these challenges. One notable project involved calculations for fruit producers who invested in PV systems for cold storage, which was a great success.
Livada Moldovei Project Overview:
Livada Moldovei is a credit line offered by the European Investment Bank (EIB) to the Government of Moldova, lending to participating commercial banks. These loans, intended for investments in the horticultural sector, have been operational since 2016. Alongside financial support, Livada Moldovei provides technical assistance and consultancy for project development.
Who Can Benefit?
Beneficiaries include economic agents and entrepreneurs engaged in horticultural activities, such as:
- Production, post-harvest handling, and processing of fruits, grapes, nuts, and vegetables.
- Seedling production, machinery manufacturing, and the commercialization of inputs.
- Agricultural tourism and ornamental gardening services.
Eligible Activities:
The project focuses on financing various investments in the horticultural sector, excluding land purchases. Some advantages of the Livada Moldovei project include:
- Competitive interest rates (2.8% – 4.9% for loans in EUR, 7-8% for loans in MDL).
- Extended repayment terms of up to 10 years.
- A grace period of up to 4 years.
- Fiscal benefits, including zero VAT and exemption from customs duties.
Our Approach:
- Project Assessment: We conducted a thorough evaluation of the needs of local fruit producers, identifying the potential for PV systems to enhance cold storage operations.
- Financial Structuring: We guided farmers in navigating the Livada Moldovei financing options, helping them secure favorable investment loans.
- PV System Implementation: We facilitated the successful installation of PV systems, which significantly reduced energy costs and enhanced operational efficiency.
- Training & Support: Ongoing training was provided to ensure farmers could operate and maintain the new systems effectively, contributing to the project’s long-term success.
Results:
Integrating PV systems in cold storage facilities has proven to be a game-changer for fruit producers in Moldova. By harnessing solar energy, these producers have significantly reduced energy costs and increased the reliability of their operations. The success of this project exemplifies how renewable energy can be effectively integrated into agriculture, serving as a model for future initiatives.
